The Critical Spirit

*Note: All scripture passages from The Scriptures 1998+ unless otherwise noted.

I am aware that not all will get this. Not all get the Bible either. What I do get are those people who want to heal and are actually doing something about it because that is where I am also. It is a life long process that does not stop until this flesh dies or Yeshua returns and changes us. Please check out our forums and chat and get to know us. We want to learn along with you. We ask that you do not interject your own thoughts into what we write. We love our readers and want to interact with you on a healthy level. So please be patient, understanding and most of all — humble and forgiving.

I write from experience because this is something I had to overcome in my own life. The destruction it did mostly was in me even though it did affect others. But I recognized this a long time ago and made it a point to submit myself to Elohim who judges righteously rather than trying to control others and make them do things “my” way. I was quick to see things my way rather than considering how things really are. I made snap decisions rather than taking time to understand things better. I thought I knew motive but in reality only Elohim can discern motive. As I healed and grew I realized that we cannot judge spiritual people filled with the Ruach according to man’s ways or thinking, if we do we because a servant of Ha Satan.

We can fool ourselves into thinking that our motives are right and even that we are doing Elohim’s will by fixing people around us. But when we have a critical spirit, it means our eye is evil and that all or most of what we see in others is evil. It’s not others that we have to fix, it’s ourselves we have to fix. People with a critical spirit cannot receive instruction from others because they are deceived into thinking they see things clear. But in reality they work against Elohim and don’t even know it.

Elohim taught us to be humble, pointing the finger and continually berating others is the work of the adversary. It is not what the people of Messiah do. It is not only contrary to sound doctrine, it is clearly not the love of the Father. Remember, Messiah taught us how to discern fruit and when we have a critical spirit, we lack the fruit of the Spirit. We lack patience, we lack forgiveness, we lack tolerance and we lack the most important thing of all — LOVE. The Father’s love!

Many times people with a critical spirit are controlling and hurt the very people who are close to them, eventually driving them away. They are focused on negative rather than positive. People who have a critical spirit (fault finding and finger pointing) are operating in the flesh, that is, their baser human nature. However there are times when this can be attributed to demonic influence in a person’s life. It does not mean that they are demon-possessed, but it means that they are being motivated and influenced by a demonic force. Jude tells us as pointed out in this article they do not have the Ruach (Holy Spirit).

Those with a critical spirit are also many times controlling, pointing the finger, blaming, false accusing, etc. They have a beam in their eye they can’t acknowledge because they are blind. They judge those who only have a spec in their eye never beholding the beam in their own eye. It’s the beam that keeps them from the Father’s love and keeps them from seeing life in a healthy way. Some of them even think they can discern your motive and the intent of your heart. This is pure arrogance since the Bible tells us only our Father in Heaven can do this.

“For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man that is in him? So also, the thoughts of Elohim no one has known, except the Spirit of Elohim.” 1 Corinthians 2:11

Remember, even Messiah submitted himself to the Father who judges righteously. He never engaged in pointing out peoples flaws. Do you want people to do that to you? Or do you want people to focus on the good things in you and point that out instead? What is more encouraging, to have someone who tries to find all your faults, or someone who seeks your good? Remember the complainers of Israel after their deliverance from Egypt? Was not Elohim wroth with them? How much more shall he be with us if we are busy noticing the flaws (or at lease things we think are flaws) of people in our lives? Wake up people, Elohim is love, he builds us up, he does not beat us down. The critical spirit only beats people down and will lose many friends. The critical spirit will not sustain lasting relationships and will destroy every one.

“For to this you were called, because Messiah also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps, who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth, who, being reviled, did not revile in return; suffering, did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously;”
1 Peter 2:21-23

Obviously, critical spirits are highly destructive, tearing down both the recipient and the giver of the criticisms.

For the entire Torah is completed in one word, in this, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” And if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!
Galatians 5:14,15

Even though the Bible teaches how to judge, the Scriptures also speak against using critical judgment. Consider Messiah’s instruction in this vein.

“Do not judge, lest you be judged. For with what judgment you judge, you shall be judged. And with the same measure you use, it shall be measured to you. And why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the plank in your own eye? Or how is it that you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the splinter out of your eye,’ and see, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you shall see clearly to remove the splinter out of your brother’s eye.”
Matthew 7:1-5

As with most sin, having a critical spirit is a perversion of something God made to be good. In this case it is a longing for God and His perfection.

The critical spirit works against the the things that Elohim is doing. Those with a critical spirit also stand in Elohim’s way and hinder the work he is doing in those who are serving him.
Yeshua the Messiah is not saying that we should not be discerning or that we should ignore the fallen nature of the world. He is also not saying that we must never, under any circumstance, criticize anyone else. In fact, the Bible tells us that we are to judge rightly. And ALWAYS respond in love, in a kind manner. Do you want to be beaten down for your flaws or lifted up? Do you want to be accused falsely or in love?

The servants of Elohim are actually told to turn away from those who accuse falsely, which is what those with a critical spirit engage in.

“But know this, that in the last days hard times shall come. For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, thankless, wrong-doers, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, haters of good, betrayers, reckless, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of Elohim, having a form of reverence1 but denying its power. And turn away from these!”
2 Timothy 3:1-5

The sin of fault finding and being critical can tear up churches, marriages and friendships. It makes molehills into mountains. It makes us become the type of people that Messiah was speaking about when He compared people with this problem to those that are trying to take a speck out of their brother’s eye when they have a log in their own.

Remember what Jude told us in Jude 1:16-19: “These are grumblers, complainers, who walk according to their own lusts, and their mouth speaks proudly, admiring faces of others for the sake of gain. But you, beloved ones, remember the words spoken before by the emissaries of our Master יהושע Messiah, because they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own wicked lusts. These are the ones who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.”

How can we say we love if we are focused on exploiting people and the things we think they are doing wrong? Don’t you know that it is what HaSatan does? And if the things you do parallel what the adversary does, who do you think you are serving? These are questions I had to answer myself. Once I got those things in order my life became more stable, my job became more stable, I was able to sustain lasting relationships as well as recognize the relationships that were destructive.

The Scriptures do not teach us to notice all the flaws and point them out, it is to build one another up. I had to learn this myself and realize that if I am to be of any use to my creator, Elohim, I have to be like him. To have a critical spirit and continually point out people’s flaws, or at least what I think are their flaws, I am not serving Elohim. And that is indicative of whom I would actually be serving if I am not doing things in love.

I will write more in relation to his concerning subservience, submission and humility as time allows. Understanding that pride is a deceptive and destructive force that many don’t recognize and it exists in those with critical spirits. Bear in mind that a critical spirit is from the adversary. It is not an Angel of Elohim. If you have a critical spirit you need to realize who your “god” actually is. I had to, long ago when I sat with an older pastor who was used of Elohim to open my eyes. It was a difficult transition, but I came to realize when the beam came out.

Do I see the negative in people? Yes, I still do and more vividly than in the past. But what I do with that has changed drastically. Messiah saw far more than I do as well, the difference is what we do with that information. Those who have removed the beam understand that even though we see the bad things in others, we no longer focus on those things. What we focus on AND ACT ON, is how to nurture others. Seeing negative is not about pointing it out to those people. It is about spreading the love of the Father on those people so that they will be healed.

Before I was healed many of the things I thought were flaws were not flaws. I was simply timid and needed to be healed. Once I experienced healing and became strong emotionally I saw things more clearly so that the things that were once too hard according to me are no longer hard. I am able to recognize the good in people and not feel crushed by others.

What would aid in your own healing? Beating you over the head every day about your faults? Or smothering you in the Father’s love and focusing on the good things in your life? Hello!? We do not build people up by pointing out things we think are wrong. Those who do so have not removed the beam from their eye, I know this first hand because I’ve been there. Not until I healed was I able to overlook many things and simply realize that Elohim is still working in all of us. I have to let go of the wheel and stay out of his way! Otherwise in my own power to inform people I would hinder the work that Elohim is doing in those people. Are you getting this?

Your perspective of the scriptures and actions will reveal if you actually have the Father’s love or not. If you have a critical spirit, I guarantee you that you will not know the Father’s love nor does it reside in you. You may have what appears as love to this world. But you must ask yourself some honest questions. One of the greatest I had to ask myself is, “Have I sustained meaningful relationships in my life?” Or do I find that I am losing people in my life? After about the past 17 years in my own life, I still have most of those people in my life. This has been part of my own growth and restoration to see and know not only can I maintain the balance? Or do I run people off simply because I continue to jab them about their flaws as “I” see them?

You see, I had to let go of the wheel! And guess what? Letting go of the wheel is not an arrival, it’s simply a starting point into real faith, into the real journey Messiah has for each of us. There is so much more beyond what our eyes behold.

Selflessness is the key, this is what Messiah brought to us. Do you know that one of the unique qualities of the servant of Messiah is not that they won’t appear flawed to the world, They will be constantly bombarded by those who have a critical spirit, even those who are supposed to be close to them!

“Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword, for I have come to bring division, a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law – and a man’s enemies are those of his own household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me, and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take up his stake and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life shall lose it, and he that has lost his life for My sake shall find it.
Matthew 10:34-39

Here is part of the key, those who have a critical spirit are NOT in Messiah. Remember what Jude told us. Get a hold of this. A critical spirit is not what Elohim is about. We are to be sold out, set apart. Being set apart is not about going through the motions as many do, even the Sabbath keeping, feast days people do this. Being set apart begins with walking in the love of Elohim. The problem is that many have not received love themselves. You see, I went through all of this myself, all of what I am writing and is why I see this. I began at an early age of about 7 or 8 years old. I was face down at the altar of a church. The pastor took time with me, the first man in my life who made a difference! I’ll never forget it. As I think on things in my childhood and teen age years were full of transitions. Pastors and spiritual people who were kind and gentle impacted my life greatly and helped make me who I am today by the grace of Elohim. And even though around age 8 I sought Elohim (not actually knowing that title) he was working in me more than I realized at that time, breaking me down to humility.

You see, nothing other than true humility can bring us to where Elohim wants us to be. Humility is never the result of a critical spirit, we know that is the adversary at work in people who engage in such things. We also know that Elohim allowed Ha Satan (The Adversary) to attack Job. Why? Because Job had been so shielded by Elohim that he was a righteous man and Ha Satan could do nothing to him!

Are you seeing this? Are you understanding the forces at work through the actions or works revealed in each of us?

Consider the works of the patriarchs, Moshe (Moses in english) one of the greatest examples outside of Yeshua the Messiah. Did they have a critical spirit or did they submit themselves to Elohim who judges righteously? Remember what the scripture says, ” Beloved, do not revenge yourselves, but give place to the wrath, for it has been written, “Vengeance is Mine, I shall repay,” says יהוה.” Romans 12:19

The critical spirit takes vengeance and does not forgive, harboring bitterness and strife which causes division. It is a mindset that is not influenced or blessed by the set apart (Holy) Spirit. Are you getting this?

I will summarize the key issue here, but I assure you only the set apart people of Elohim will receive this and know it:

“And let endurance have a perfect work, so that you be perfect and complete, lacking in naught. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of Elohim, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it shall be given to him. But he should ask in belief, not doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For that man should not think that he shall receive whatever from the Master – he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
James 1:4-8

Understand that those with double standards are highly unstable and have not escaped the worldly mindset. Although I wish they would and I pray for those people even though even prayer will not redeem them. Elohim never forces his way, only friends of the adversary force their way, those who have not escaped the flesh. Hear me. But only as I hear the set apart Spirit. Many have accused me falsely, but Elohim is my judge and it is to him alone I submit my being, not to those who judge falsely although I do submit myself to the brethren as well. Those who show the fruit of the Ruach (Hebrew for Holy Spirit). The fruit of the Ruach cannot be faked and only those who have the Ruach can discern fruit. The critical spirit cannot.

To those in the faith that Jude exhorted us to continue in that pertains to Yeshua the Messiah and his shed blood, understand that your eyes have only been opened by the grace of Elohim because of your humility, your love for the redeemed and excellent spirit that you have received favor of Elohim in these troublous times.

May the grace of Yeshua, the love (understand that love must be first) of Elohim and the set apart Spirit be your only strength and power in this life, anything else is useless.

I leave this with you even though there is much more I could write on. Focus on the word of Elohim, never lean to your own understanding. I can explain it, but I can’t help or make you understand it. Trust me, the only way I was able to come to understand anything is by the grace of Elohim! Get tapped into him! Only when we seek him with all our heart and discover his love for us will we find him! Let go of the wheel!
